SMS Choir Home Page
Welcome to the SMS Choir page. We have over 300 students in grades 5-8 enrolled in our excellent choral program. Participating in this program is a wonderful opportunity for students to grow musically. Being involved in music also enriches lives within and outside of school.
Middle School Choir–Offered Grades 5-8
The Middle School choir program works to develop the whole musician. The most important component of this development is a love of life-long music enjoyment. Students are exposed to many styles of music, spanning many cultures. Additionally, we focus on the development of the adolescent voice, singing skills and techniques and musicianship.
Each choir is a continuation of the previous year’s program. Students are introduced to increasingly more challenging music and higher level singing techniques. A major issue for this age level, especially with the boys, is the changing voice. We work to understand what is happening at this stage of adolescence, while at the same time encouraging and reassuring that "this too will pass!" The most important part of this phase is to continue to keep singing!
As an extension, students in grade 6 – 8 are offered the opportunity to take part in the vocal lesson program. Vocal lessons are an opportunity for students to receive more individualized instruction than they receive in the large choral experience. Not only does this instruction help students to understand how to use their voice, develop musicianship and increase their confidence level. The program allows students to construct their own learning and develop musical and life skills.
