    SMS Student Council is hosting the 6th ANNUAL QUIET OAKS HOSPICE FOOD DRIVE October 11th - 20th.  This is a contest between Student Advisories.  Each SA receives a BINGO card and when filled it can be turned in for a bag of candy. The SA who fills the most BINGO cards is treated to morning treats. There will be a grocery cart in the front entry to SMS if community members would like to donate items.

    SMS Annual Veterans Day Recognition Event
    In honor of VETERANS DAY a Wall of Honor will be on display throughout the month of November. If you have family members who are active military or veterans, you are invited to bring in NON-returnable photos to be displayed on the Wall of Honor.
    Please label the photos with: Name of Military member, branch of the military served, student name, grade and relation to person.
    Pictures can be dropped off to Mrs. Dornburg in room B110 by October 29.

    All Grades: Knowledge Bowl
    Any student in grades 6-8 interested in being a part of Knowledge Bowl this year should sign up with Ms. Lauer in room C114.  The season runs from late October to the beginning of December.  Please contact Sarah Lauer with questions.
    Knowledge Bowl (KB) is an interdisciplinary academic competition that promotes academic achievement and rewards academic excellence. During a KB meet, teams of students work cooperatively to solve oral and written questions. No team is eliminated during a meet and every team participates in every round. Questions are related to all areas of learning corresponding to grade level.

    Project Connect in St. Cloud is hosting an event that offers people within our community the opportunity to access services offered by governmental, non-profit and other agencies.
    At the next Project Connect, you can learn more about housing assistance, disability services, youth agencies, mental health support, medical care, vaccinations and doctor visits, legal services and more.
    There is a free lunch at noon along with door prizes and giveaways. Project connect is from 10a to 3p on Tuesday, October 26 at the River’s Edge Convention Center in St. Cloud.

    Hiring - part-time, full-time, and substitutes
    ISD 748 is hiring! Technology, Special Education, Food Service, Transportation, Community Education, Education, and other programs are looking for workers. Positions include building attendants (evenings/weekends); cashiers, and cooks/dishwashers (during school hours); custodial, cleaners, and snow removal (school hours, afternoons, or evenings); and more.     Skylert Emergency Broadcast - Test
    Families: we will send a test emergency message on Wednesday, October 27 via email, text, and phone. You can customize your notification preferences for Skylert by logging into Skyward Family Access and selecting "Skylert" on the left menu. We will run our test on October 27 to make sure you know which phone numbers, text numbers, and email addresses are designated for emergency notifications. This will be how you are notified for weather-related schedule changes and other emergencies.

    Emergency Broadband Benefit
    The Federal Communications Commission has launched a temporary program to help families and households struggling to afford Internet service during the COVID-19 pandemic.  The Emergency Broadband Benefit provides a discount of up to $50 per month toward broadband service for eligible households and up to $75 per month for households on qualifying Tribal lands. Eligible households can also receive a one-time discount of up to $100 to purchase a laptop, desktop computer, or tablet from participating providers. Eligible households can enroll directly with the Universal Service Administrative Company (USAC) using an online or mail-in application. To learn more about the benefit, including eligibility and enrollment information, visit www.fcc.gov/broadbandbenefit or call 833.511.0311.

    The Schoology Gradebook feature offers a window to look in on your student’s learning to see not only grades but also missing assignments, teacher feedback, scores, if something is turned in but not yet graded, and more. We will be using the Schoology Gradebook this year for current and up-to-date grading and not Skyward. Only final quarter grades will be posted in Skyward. For directions on how to view grades and assignments, please see the video directions linked here. This video also shows you how you can set up parent notification emails so you can get regularly scheduled email summaries of how your student is doing.

    Homecoming shirts will be on sale before school and during lunch for $15 to support Tanner's Team.  Created in 2011. the Tanner's Team Foundation helps families with children who are fighting life-threatening illness or serious injury.  This foundation is based out of Sauk Rapids.

    Free Meals for K-8: Feeding Area Children Together (FACT) Pack Enrollment 21-22
    FACT Packs are one-gallon zipper bags that contain a child-friendly, non-perishable breakfast, lunch and snack for each day school is not in session. Bags are packed by volunteers during the monthly pack sessions and delivered to schools. Each FACT Pack is discreetly placed in student backpacks by volunteers, teachers, and staff members on Fridays or the last day of school before break. Each menu contains a variety of fruits, vegetables, and proteins. It does not contain chips, cookies or candy. All our menus are peanut-safe and do not contain pork products.  FACT Packs are provided to K-8 students free of charge at the schools we serve. Feeding Area Children Together (FACT) is not a government program.  FACT is a 100% volunteer-run organization funded by individuals and local businesses. All money donated goes directly to purchasing food and the minimal supplies needed to help feed our students experiencing hunger.     ISD 748 is utilizing layered mitigation strategies to slow the spread of COVID-19 in our schools. Please review the current protocols here. Any changes to these protocols will be communicated on our COVID-19 webpage and to all families via Skylert.

    Educational Equity and Student Experience Committee
    Thank you to the students, staff, parents/guardians, and residents who applied to serve on the new committee. Of the over 180 total applications received, almost 50 were students leaving less than 50 vacancies for the 130+ adults who applied. Applicants were notified of their participation on Thursday. The committee will provide updates on their work during the school year.  Please visit our new Educational Equity webpage for updates.

    Free parent support groups hosted by Central Minnesota Mental Health Center
    First and Third Thursdays beginning September 16

    The Central Minnesota Mental Health Center invites everyone to Parent Connection, a group for anyone who wants or needs to remember that they are not alone as they work to help their children grow into their best and healthiest selves. The group is a safe, shame-free space to ask questions, learn practical, easily-accessible strategies to manage everyday challenges and behaviors, and develop relationships with other parents and families working through similar experiences. The free sessions are facilitated by a graduate-level social worker who provides therapy to children in elementary schools, and has expertise in ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, supporting twice-exceptional children, anxiety, depression, trauma, grief and loss, and adjustment challenges. There is no one right way to parent, and the group allows families the opportunity to learn a variety of different strategies and perspectives, along with actionable steps to create change.     ALICE Safety Drills

    Sartell-St. Stephen ISD 748 uses the ALICE strategy for response to an intruder in our buildings at the recommendation of local law enforcement agencies and the MN Department of Education. ALICE (an acronym for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter and Evacuate) empowers staff and students to make informed safety decisions in the event of a crisis. Schools will be practicing their safety drills the week of September 27.     Tuesday, September 7 is the first day for grade 6 students ONLY. 
    Wednesday, September 8 is the first day for grades 7 and 8.

    Students are allowed in the building at 7:45a.  There is no supervision before this time.

    Around Cloud Tutors
    Around Cloud Tutors is a free, virtual tutoring platform for all K-12 students in the greater St. Cloud region. Over the past 7 months, they have served 115 students, and are working hard to ensure even more have access and opportunity to this platform.     ISD 748 is establishing a committee to ensure that each child is part of a healthy, safe, engaged, and supported environment through a renewed partnership with students, staff, and residents of the community.
