Sustainability in Food Service

  • ISD 748 Food Service is committed to reducing waste and bringing sustainability to the forefront. Here is a sampling of our practices:

    • Students sort food waste so that a service can convert it into hog feed
    • SMS students in the Youth Eco Solutions (YES!) Group received a grant that was used to:
      • begin recycling empty milk cartons (we successfully piloted this at the middle school last year)
      • purchase reusable rack covers and additional spoons to cut down on single-use plastics
    • Local foods (Minnesota grown/processed) are integrated all throughout our menus including fruits, vegetables, bread, and milk; Look for the “Local” label on our Nutrislice menus for monthly features
    • Food that cannot make the weekend or be reused is donated weekly to a local shelter
