    Greetings Sartell Middle School Families,

On November 9, the Sartell-St. Stephen School District made the decision (after reviewing the multiple data points) to move Grades 3-12 to Distance Learning starting on November 16.  We are so thankful we were able to start the year in the Hybrid Model and were able to stay in that model for the entire 1st quarter. We are also thankful to have had yesterday and today in school so students could meet new 2nd quarter teachers and get required materials before moving into Distance Learning.

As we prepare to make this change, please spend some time reviewing the SMS Distance Learning Model for specific information regarding Distance Learning at Sartell Middle School. This plan shares general information about Distance Learning, our daily schedule, attendance information, and much more.

We will continue to communicate important information from the Middle School office to support our students and families during Distance Learning. Classroom teachers will also continue communicating with students through Schoology.

    Important Dates
    • Thursday, November 12 (purple day) - all SMS students will attend school from home
    • Friday, November 13 - no school for students; it is a day for teachers to plan and prepare for Distance Learning.
Second Quarter Material Pick Up: If your child has been quarantined or your child has been in Distance Learning by family choice, your child may have materials to pick up for the 2nd quarter. Teachers will be reaching out to students who have materials to pick up. Those materials can be picked up at the Middle School from 12:00p-3:30p on Thursday, November 12 or 8:30a-3:30p on Friday, November 13th. If your family is quarantined, please do not come to school to pick up materials. Please call the office and we will make other arrangements.

If you have questions, please call the Middle School office at 320-656-3710 so we can route you to the appropriate staff member.

Thank you for your ongoing support!

    Sartell Middle School Principal

    Message from Principal Laura Arndt
As we settle into this school year, I would like to take this opportunity to share about two important ways we are working to support your child(ren) this school year. The first is continuing the work we started last year teaching students how to be SABREStrong! SABRE is an acronym that stands for Safe, Accountable, Brave, Respectful, and Engaged. We have spent the last two weeks teaching students how to be SABREStrong in our classrooms, lunchroom, hallways, bathrooms, buses, and common spaces. Kids need to know the expectations before they can meet those expectations. We have also spent time teaching Distance Learning expectations. I am including our Distance Learning matrix here so you can also reinforce and remind students of these expectations at home.

We also know how challenging Middle School can be, especially now with the addition of a pandemic, so we are also focusing on students' social-emotional learning in our Student Advisories this year by using the CharacterStrong curriculum. This program is built around eight essential character traits and social-emotional skills that have been proven to help us be productive, empathic, successful people. The traits that will be covered throughout the year include patience, kindness, humility, respect, selflessness, forgiveness, honesty, and commitment. As part of the program, students will be given a new challenge each week that helps them to practice one of these character traits in their daily lives. This challenge is called a CharacterDare. Please ask your children about the dare for the week and maybe even do it as a whole family!

    Technology Issues
If your child is experiencing technology issues, please refer to this link for common troubleshooting answers.

All Grades: SMS Fishing Picture Contest
Bring in pictures of your summer catches for a chance to win prizes. Size of the fish does not matter. . .it's all about the pic! Bring pictures to room #C116 or email them to Mr. Determan.  Contest deadline is October 14. Click here for contest rules. If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Determan.

Distance and Hybrid Learning students will be able to pick up free meals on their home learning days. Note: students will not need to pre-order meals at this time. If students have special dietary needs, please contact Allison Eikmeier so we can make accommodations.

  • SMS Families,

At the August 17 meeting, the school board approved Learning Model #2- Hybrid Learning for our school. The final decision regarding the Fall Learning Model will be made and communicated to families via email on Thursday, August 27.

To view the specific 2020-21 Learning Model plans for Sartell Middle School, please click here.

The Learning Model our school will use will depend upon Stearns County COVID-19 infection rates, per guidance from the Governor. COVID-19 infection rates will continue to be monitored and families can expect a communication every other Thursday beginning September 17 as to the anticipated Learning Model for the following two weeks. If a more urgent need arises, the school district will promptly shift to a more restrictive model. Families also have the option of participating in a distance learning only format.

Please review our ISD 748 Safe Learning Plan for an overview of all Learning Models and additional department-specific information.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
