    Sartell-St. Stephen Families,

    This is a special communication to outline an extension of our Distance Learning implementation and other important COVID-19 related information.

    Distance Learning Extended
    Amid this latest surge in the COVID-19 pandemic, and in order to protect the safety, health and wellbeing of our students, families and staff, we have made the decision to extend the Distance Learning Models for all grades Pre-K-12 students through at least January 8.

    SHS Fall & Winter Activities
    Activities Director Ryan Hauge emailed SHS families this morning that, as required by Emergency Executive Order 20-99, all in-person activities must be completed or stopped effective 11:59 p.m. on Friday, November 20. This includes practices, group workouts, games, and tournaments. These activities will remain paused until at least December 18. Schools are also not allowed to rent out gyms, weight rooms, or other facilities during this time. Please visit our SHS Activities page for additional information.

    Instructional Materials Pickup/Drop-Off
    If your child has instructional materials for pick up or to drop off at school, please mark your calendars for Wednesday, December 2. All schools will have needed materials available from 8am-6pm. Each principal will be providing building-specific directions as most - but not all - students will have materials for pickup. Please watch for communication from your child’s school or teacher(s) with further details.

    COVID-19 Symptoms and Attendance Reporting
    Parents/Guardians: please continue to be vigilant about monitoring for signs and symptoms of illness. 

    • Please report COVID-19 related symptoms to your building's school nurses using this form - even during Distance Learning. This form should be used if you only need to report a positive case or quarantine.  
    • Attendance: If you need to report a student absence, please contact the building Receptionist.

    As we step into Thanksgiving week, I want to express my gratitude to our students, staff and families for your positive partnership, tenacity and hard work. Please do your part to assist in getting us back to in-person instruction by following social distancing protocols, wearing a mask and reporting any COVID-19 illness. We cannot do this without everyone working together! We have an incredibly strong school community and we will continue to face the challenges this pandemic has put before us with grace and perseverance.

    Sartell-St. Stephen Families,

    This is our bi-weekly communication that provides a school district COVID-19 update.

    There is no change in learning model from our last communication. All schools will be in a Distance Learning model beginning Monday, November 16. Families with children at Riverview Intermediate, Sartell Middle and Sartell High Schools should have received an email from their principal on Wednesday, November 11 with school-specific information.

    We will continue to monitor our situation closely and in consultation with the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE), Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) and Stearns County Public Health. We are concerned with the rates of continued community spread and will notify you as soon as possible if Distance Learning will continue after December 4. We want to give families as much lead time as possible for planning.

    Symptoms and Reporting

    It is very important for families to continue to check for symptoms and report COVID-19-related illnesses and positive test results to our school nurses using this form. This information is critical to our ability to keep track of school-specific case rates and community spread which is used to assist us in bringing students back to in-person instruction. 

    A reminder that our COVID-19 dashboard shows how many students and staff have tested positive for COVID-19 in the last 14 days. Note that the dashboard only indicates positive cases and does not include those who have had close contact with a positive case and need to quarantine.

    Calendar

    The following outlines learning models at each school for the next three weeks:

      • Friday, November 13: Grades 3-12 No School (RIS/SMS/SHS teacher prep for Distance Learning)
    • Week of November 16-20: PreK-12: All schools in Distance Learning
    • Week of November 23-27
        • Monday-Wednesday: All schools in Distance Learning
        • Thursday-Friday: No School - Thanksgiving Break
    • Week of November 30 - December 4: PreK-12: All schools in Distance Learning

    Food Service

    Meals will be available for pick up at some school buildings and various community locations on all school days for K-12 students. Please visit our Food Service News page for details.

    Weather-related School Schedules

    Due to potential variances in building-specific learning models, the school district will weigh each weather situation individually and make a public announcement via our normal protocols (direct emails/texts/phone calls to families and via media outlets, our district website and social media). A reminder that families may modify their Skylert notification preferences at any time in Skyward Family Access (click the Skylert tab on the left menu). Here is an overview of what weather schedules may look like with each learning model:

    • Distance Learning: the school district will likely not have two-hour late starts or snow days. Students should plan on attending school remotely per their regular schedule.
    • Hybrid or In-Person: schools may have two-hour late starts and/or cancellations for snow days.

    Technology Support

    We know how much our school community (families and staff) would love to be back in-person and back to normal. While this is not possible at this time, we need to stay united for our kids and remain hopeful for the future. We will get through this together and remain Sabre Strong.

    Message from Superintendent Schwiebert:

    This is a special communication that outlines changes to the learning models at Riverview Intermediate School, Sartell Middle School and Sartell High School and extends the Distance Learning model timeline at Oak Ridge Early Learning Center and Pine Meadow Primary School.

    Due to COVID-19-related staffing shortages, we will be moving these schools to Distance Learning beginning on Monday, November 16. We anticipate staying in a Distance Learning model at all schools until at least Friday, December 4. Additionally, High School activities and athletics will continue, but spectators will not be allowed beginning Monday, November 16. In-person Middle School activities will be discontinued at this time.

    We have added a COVID-19 dashboard to our webpage for you to follow how many students and staff have tested positive for COVID-19. Note that the dashboard only indicates positive cases, it does not include those who have had close contact with a positive case and need to quarantine.

    Even though we continue to see low transmission rates in our students; there is a surge in community transmission rates. We believe moving to Distance Learning is the safest decision for our students and staff. The District will continue to monitor the situation and communicate any changes with families. 

    In order for staff to prepare for this transition, there will be no school on Friday, November 13 for students in grades 3-12 at Riverview Intermediate, Sartell Middle and Sartell High Schools.

    Distance Learning daily student schedules will be different than hybrid schedules, so families should watch for important information from school principals. The hybrid calendar will no longer be in effect; families should plan for live-virtual class sessions and offline learning experiences Monday-Friday. As we all transition together, here is a list of Distance Learning Expectations for families and students. 

    The following outlines learning models at each school for the next four weeks:

    Week of November 9

    • PreK-2 (ORELC and PMPS) continue in Distance Learning
    • Grades 3-12
      • Tuesday: Blue Hybrid In-Person
      • Wednesday: Silver Hybrid In-Person
      • Thursday: Purple Hybrid Day (Remote Learning for all 3-12 students) - NOTE HYBRID CALENDAR CHANGE
      • Friday: No School for students; teacher preparation for transition. Food service will continue (see link below).

    Week of November 16-20

    • PreK-12: All schools in Distance Learning

    Week of November 23-27

    • Monday-Wednesday: All schools in Distance Learning
    • Thursday-Friday: No School - Thanksgiving Break

    Week of November 30 - December 4

    • PreK-12: All schools in Distance Learning

    ISD 748 Families,

    On Wednesday, October 28, we received new guidance from the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) as it relates to changing learning models at our schools. As we have shared, while working with the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) and the MDE, we had been directed to look at multiple case-rate data points in our decision-making including Stearns County, ISD 748 community, student and staff rates. 

    We have now been advised to primarily use our school-specific data. Previously we were told to rely more heavily on Stearns County and local school district data. Last week, those two case rate data points met the threshold of Distance Learning. This change is good news for us because we have minimal positive COVID-19 cases in our schools. We have also seen very low or non-existent transmission rates in our buildings.  

    After extensive consultation with MDE, MDH and Stearns County Public Health, we have determined that we DO NOT need to move to Distance Learning at Sartell Middle School and Sartell High School on November 10 as we shared last Friday.

    We know these decisions are stressful, especially for families. We want to reiterate that we are making decisions with the health and safety of our students and staff at the forefront and in as timely a manner as possible when information and guidance becomes available.

    When we set up our Safe Learning Model Plan last August, we instituted a two week lead time when possible for making any changes because of the impact on our students, staff and families. Due to the change, we now anticipate that if we need to move a school to distance learning, the notice we send families will be on a much shorter timeframe as it will be caused by staff shortages, COVID-19 cases within the school or other COVID-19 related matters. We know that in this situation we would be in a distance learning model for a minimum of 14 days.

    We are grateful that we can keep our students in school as we know it is best for them academically and for their social-emotional well being.

    Here is the revised calendar for the upcoming two weeks:

    • Week of November 2-6
      • PreK-2 (ORELC and PMPS): continue In-Person UPDATED 11/4: PreK-2: Distance Learning
      • Grades 3-12: continue to follow the Hybrid calendar
    • Week of November 9-13
      • Grades PreK-12 No School on Monday, November 9 - teacher professional development day

  • October 23 District Learning Model Update 

    Sartell-St. Stephen ISD 748 families,  

    This is a special communication that outlines changes to the learning models at Sartell Middle School and Sartell High School.

    As we have previously shared, we have multiple data points to look at in making our learning model determinations. These data points include the Stearns County level case rate, local school district case rate and school-specific data. 

    At this time, both the Stearns County COVID-19 case rate and our local case rate have dramatically increased (County rate is at 46.36 and local District is at 40.26).  Additionally, we have seen more COVID-19 District exposures that have affected our student and staff attendance. Due to the dramatic increase in county and local case rates, we have made the difficult decision to move SMS and SHS to Distance Learning beginning Tuesday, November 10. This date coincides with the end of the first quarter for our secondary students and we feel our students are best served in being able to finish out the first quarter in the Hybrid model. To allow staff time to prepare for this shift, there will be no school for students in grades 6-12 on Friday, November 6. Monday, November 9 will continue to serve as a staff professional development day as originally scheduled and students in grades PreK-12 will not report. Additionally, our last day of in-person student activities for SMS and SHS students will be November 7.

    Distance Learning schedules will look different at SMS and SHS, so please watch for important information from the building principals. The hybrid calendar will no longer be in effect for SMS and SHS; families should plan for live-virtual class sessions and offline learning experiences Monday-Friday.

    The following outlines learning models at each school for the next three weeks:

    Week of October 26-30

    • PreK-2 (ORELC and PMPS) will continue to attend In-Person
    • Grades 3-12 will continue to follow the Hybrid calendar

    Week of November 2-6

    Sartell-St. Stephen ISD 748 families, 

    District Learning Model Update

    This is our bi-weekly communication that provides an update on the school district’s Learning Model for the upcoming two weeks.  In making this decision as we move through the school year, the District now has access to more data than when we adopted our School Year Plan. The Minnesota Department of Health is now encouraging us to use the County level case rate as a starting point in the decision making process while also looking at our local school district case rate and school-specific data in determining whether to make a change to our learning model.  At this time, although our COVID-19 county case rate has increased, our local school district case rate has stayed below the Distance Learning threshold of 30 coming in at 28.58 and we have seen minimal cases in our school buildings.  After considering all of this data, there will be no change to our current learning model. As a reminder, if you feel that being in schools not the best option for your student, you can always choose to move to full-time Distance Learning.  

    Weeks of 10/19 - 10/30

    • PK-2 will continue to attend In-Person
    • Grades 3-12 will continue to follow the Hybrid calendar

    • March 12 - Parents/guardians must notify their child’s principal by March 12 for a Quarter 4 switch.

    Families opting to switch from In-Person/Hybrid to Distance Learning may do so at any time. Parents must notify the school principal in writing. The District will be ready to serve students who have switched within two school days.

    To: Constituents in Stearns County
    From: Stearns County Superintendents

    We are writing to you today to ask for your help to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

    We are just over a month into the school year and are seeing an increase in the number of positive COVID cases. This results in our schools needing to move to more restrictive learning models such as hybrid and/or distance learning. This is disappointing to everyone involved.

    We have been given requirements from the Minnesota Department of Health that we are following in the schools, and they are working to reduce the spread of the virus.  Across the state, there has been minimal transmission within the schools. However, officials at MDH have said the COVID -19 virus is, for the most part, spreading outside of the school. The transmission of the infection is happening in the community settings, at family and social gatherings.  

    We want our kids in school as much as possible and parents have said you also want our kids in schools.  As more and more of our society continues to open, schools are having to go the other direction. We know of only one way that gives us the best chance at safely keeping our kids in school, sports, and activities. Not only do we have to be sharp in school, but our students and families need to remain sharp outside of it.  

    We need your help.  We know you have heard this information before, but it bears repeating as it’s going to take all of us to make a difference. Please help us keep cases low, and our kids in school, by following the guidelines offered by MDH. We are working closely with Stearns County and CentraCare and they are also in support of sharing this message. 

    • Avoid crowds
    • Keep family and social gatherings outdoors
    • Stay 6 feet away from others
    • Wear a mask
    • Wash your hands
    • Stay home when you are sick

    Please follow these guidelines as they are for your kids and our students.

    District Learning Model Update

    This is our bi-weekly communication that provides an update on the school district’s Learning Model for the following two weeks. At this time, our COVID-19 county case rate has steadily increased and has met the threshold for changing the learning model at Riverview Intermediate School (RIS)

    Our PK-12 plan:

    • PK-2 (ORELC and PMPS) will continue to attend In-Person
    • Grades 3-5 (RIS) will move to the Hybrid calendar on Monday, October 12
      • There will be no school for 3-5 students on Friday, October 9 to allow for learning model transition planning.
      • Note the week of October 12 is shortened due to conferences and Fall Break.
    • Grades 6-12 will continue to follow the Hybrid calendarAs a reminder the week of October 12 is different from the regular hybrid schedule due to Fall Break.

    Student Attendance Requirements - Hybrid Model

    On Blue or Silver days when students are expected to be attending school In-Person, parents may not opt for their child to participate via Distance Learning. Students are required to be physically in attendance. Teachers carefully design lessons around which students are participating in-person and which students are participating remotely. Schools have taken extraordinary measures to meet the needs of both groups of students. The only exception to this requirement is if a child is ill and meets the thresholds as explained on the COVID-19 Symptoms Home Screening Tool. For any reason other than illness or quarantine, students not attending in-person on their scheduled day will be marked absent. If your child is ill, we want them to take the day off and focus on getting better. 

    School Board Listening Session - School Experiences during COVID

    The Sartell-St. Stephen School Board will be hosting a listening session at 6:30pm in October 7 in the Sartell Middle School Performing Arts Center. This session is designed to provide the school community with an opportunity to share perspectives and experiences on how this unique school year has been going for families. The school board would like to hear what is working well alongside challenges families are facing.

    At this session, participants will be required to follow the MN Department of Health (MDH) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) social distancing guidelines:

    • All participants are asked to wear a mask
    • All participants will be seated 6 ft apart (or in family groups)

    MN Department of Health Update

    The Minnesota Department of Health recently released an updated screening tool and attendance guide to assist in determining whether your child is well enough to come to school. Please take a moment to review the screening tool and the attendance guide if your child is feeling unwell or if you have been informed that you have been in close contact to an individual who tested positive for COVID-19. If you are calling in to report a student who is out due to illness, please be as specific as possible when reporting symptoms to assist our school nursing staff in determining what follow-up calls are necessary.

    Full-Time Distance Learning

    Full-time Distance Learning families may have materials that need to be dropped off or picked up from school. Teachers will communicate directly with families.

    Families Opting to Switch Learning Models

    District Learning Model Update

    This is the first of our bi-weekly communications that will provide an update on the school district’s Learning Model for the following two weeks. At this time, our COVID-19 county case numbers have held relatively steady so there will be no change in our plans:

    • PK-5 will continue to attend In-Person
    • Grades 6-12 will continue to follow the Hybrid calendar

    Full-Time Distance Learning

    • Pending no change in order from the State of MN, Learning Model switches for the remainder of the school year will be on a quarterly basis: 
      • January 8 - Parents/guardians must notify their child’s principal by January 8 for a Quarter 3 switch.
      • March 12 - Parents/guardians must notify their child’s principal by March 12 for a Quarter 4 switch.

    Families opting to switch from In-Person/Hybrid to Distance Learning may do so at any time. Parents must notify the school principal in writing. The District will be ready to serve students who have switched within two school days.

    Food Service
    The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently provided a waiver to extend the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) operations to school districts. All Sartell-St. Stephen students will be able to receive free breakfast and lunch daily between September 21-November 6. Even with this program, families are encouraged to apply for free and reduced lunch benefits.

    Distance and Hybrid Learning students will be able to pick up free meals on their home learning days. Students will not need to pre-order meals at this time. If students have special dietary needs, please contact Allison Eikmeier so we can make accommodations. Information on the meal pickup procedure can be found on our Food Service News page.

    Safety and Health
    As always, we are counting on you to help us maintain safe and healthy learning environments. As a reminder:

    • Parents/guardians should be conducting daily screening for each child to determine if they can attend school. Please review this Home Screening Form before sending your child(ren) to school.
    • When students enter the school building, they will go through a walk-through temperature scanner. If they register a temperature above 100, they will be evaluated further by the school nurse.
    • Students are required to wear masks on the school bus and in the school building. 

    Mr. Froemming
    It is with a heavy heart that I inform you of a recent loss to our school community. On Wednesday, September 16, Mr. Rustie Froemming passed away. Mr. Froemming has been a part of the Sartell-St. Stephen family for 32 years. He has taught high school business education and been an integral part of our cross country coaching team. Rustie was dedicated to serving the students and our community. He will be greatly missed. His infectious smile, love for inspiring youth through his teaching and coaching, and legacy will never be forgotten. Our Sabre family lost a member who was a pillar of our school community. Please keep the Froemming family and our students and staff in your thoughts.

    Sartell-St. Stephen Families,

    I am writing today to give you a brief update on a few important items. I am confirming the decision the school board made on August 17 as to the learning models used to begin our school year on September 8.

    • In-Person for grades PreK-5
    • Hybrid Model for grades 6-12 
      • Note that the first week of school differs from most weeks for the hybrid calendar.  Please review the hybrid calendar to ensure you know which days your child attends.
      • Transportation for students in grades 6-12 will begin at half capacity. Families that indicated they will be able to self-transport will not be picked up while we are in a hybrid model.

    Open Houses - Next Week
    Our annual open houses for grades PreK-9 will look different this year as we work to reduce the number of people in each school building. Your child’s principal will provide you with specific details regarding their open house plan.

    • Parents should be doing daily screening for each child to determine if they can attend school. Please review these questions before sending your child to school.

    We will begin our every other Thursday communication on September 17. This regular communication will provide an update on the Learning Model for the following two weeks.

    We are so excited to welcome our students back to school. We have had staff in training and working hard to prepare our classrooms and we are ready to begin another awesome year! Thank you for your continued support of your child’s education.

    Governor Walz issued an emergency executive order requiring face coverings in all indoor businesses and indoor public setting, including public schools. 

    Effective Saturday, July 25, 2020 all staff and visitors are required to wear a face covering when they are in District buildings or on District grounds where it is not possible to maintain social distancing.  This information applies to face coverings in school buildings and on grounds this summer.  We will provide information prior to school starting with respect to additional exceptions and options for face coverings when school is in session.

    To show unity within our communities as we battle the COVID-19 crisis, Sartell-St. Stephen schools will be participating in #BetheLightMN. The lighting will be held on Wednesdays in April at 8:20pm (which when converted to military time is 20:20); lights will remain on for 20 minutes. Our communities have shown tremendous support for each other, and there is no doubt that it will continue in the coming days and weeks of the crisis. This is a symbolic gesture of support for each other. Students and community members should not gather on district property as we follow social distancing protocols. #StayHomeMN  We light our fields as a commitment to solidarity and unity as we fight this disease together.

    We miss seeing you, Sabres! We know it is disappointing that many important end of the school year activities have been cancelled. We especially sympathize with the seniors - Our hearts go to out to the Class of 2020!

  • Postsecondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) is a program that allows 10th-, 11th- and 12th-grade students to earn both high school and college credit while still in high school, through enrollment in and successful completion of college nonsectarian courses at eligible participating postsecondary institutions. Most PSEO courses are offered on the campus of the postsecondary institution; some courses are offered online. Each participating college or university sets its own admissions requirements for enrollment into the PSEO courses. Eleventh and 12th-grade students may take PSEO courses on a full- or part-time basis; 10th graders are eligible to enroll in PSEO on a more limited basis (see note below). Students must meet the PSEO residency and eligibility requirements and abide by participation limits specified in Minnesota Statutes, section 124D.09. If a school district determines a pupil is not on track to graduate, she/he may continue to participate in PSEO on a term by term basis.

    By March 1 of each year, or three weeks prior to the date a student registers for courses for the following school year, schools must provide PSEO information to all students in grades 8-11 and their families. To assist the district in planning, a student must inform the district by May 30 of each year of their intent to enroll in postsecondary courses during the following school year.

    There is no charge to PSEO students for tuition, books or fees for items that are required to participate in a course; however, students may incur fees for equipment that becomes their property when the course or program is completed, textbooks that are not returned to the postsecondary institution according to their policies, or for tuition costs if they do not notify the district by May 30 and the district does not waive this date requirement.

    Funds are available to help pay transportation expenses for qualifying students to participate in PSEO courses on college campuses. For more information on these funds, access the PSEO Mileage Reimbursement Program Instructions.

    Enrolling in a PSEO course does not prohibit a student from participating in activities sponsored by the high school.

    School districts must allow a PSEO student reasonable access to the high school building, computers and/or other technology resources during regular school hours to participate in PSEO courses, whether online or on campus.

    Each year, districts must publish their grade-weighting policy on their website, including a list of courses for which students can earn weighted grades.

    All courses taken through the PSEO program must meet graduation requirements. Districts must transcript credits earned in PSEO by a ratio prescribed in statute. Districts have the authority to decide which subject area and standards the PSEO course meets. If there is a dispute between the district and the student regarding the number of credits granted for a particular course, the student may appeal the board's decision to the commissioner. The commissioner's decision regarding the number of credits will be final.

    Postsecondary institutions are required to allow PSEO students to enroll in online courses consistent with the institution’s policy regarding postsecondary student enrollment in online courses.

    Tenth-grade students may initially enroll in one Career and Technical Education (CTE) PSEO course if they receive a reading proficiency score of “meets” or “exceeds” on the 8th grade MCA. If 10th graders taking a CTE PSEO course earn at least a grade C in that class, they may take additional CTE PSEO courses. If the student did not take the MCA in 8th-grade, another reading assessment accepted by the enrolling postsecondary institution can be substituted. For students with disabilities, there is an alternative option to demonstrate reading proficiency.
